Foggy Well Water— What Causes It & How To Fix It

Foggy or cloudy water coming from your well can be unsettling, especially when it happens out of nowhere. Luckily, this is a common issue for well owners—and in many cases, it’s harmless. Here’s what could be causing your cloudy water and how to clear it up.

In most cases, cloudy water is caused by tiny air bubbles trapped in your water. This often happens after a drop in water pressure, recent plumbing work, or seasonal changes that affect the water table. If the cloudiness clears up after a few minutes in a glass, it’s just air—and totally safe.

Other causes include sediment stirred up by a failing pump or changes in groundwater flow. You might also be dealing with mineral buildup—especially if you live in a hard water zone like Spring Hill. In rare cases, the cloudiness can be a sign of bacterial contamination, especially if the water also smells or tastes off.

Start with a simple glass test. Fill a clear glass and watch it—if it clears from the bottom up, it’s air bubbles. If it stays murky, it could be sediment or contamination. Look for other signs: rusty stains, foul smells, or sand in the sink.

To be sure, schedule a professional water test. This checks for bacteria, minerals, and any other contaminants that may be causing the issue. If your well hasn’t been inspected in a while, it’s worth getting the entire system checked—pump, tank, and casing.

If it’s just air, no fix is needed. But for sediment or mineral issues, installing a sediment filter or softener can make a big difference. For deeper problems like bacterial contamination, your well may need shock chlorination or repairs to the casing.

At Spring Hill Well Drilling, we offer full water testing, well inspections, and treatment solutions. Foggy water shouldn’t be ignored—but it also doesn’t mean panic. We’ll help you clear it up and keep your water safe and clean.
